GTAIM - Digital transformation of the health sector

Digital technology is playing an increasingly important role in the health sector and is one of the main levers for the transformation of the health system. In addition to the clinical information systems used in hospital organisations, there are inter-organisational information systems (GHT, city/hospital, digital platforms, etc.) and, more recently, digital technologies and applications for telemedicine or individual health management. In addition, new promises are emerging around artificial intelligence and the use of Big data in health as well as around connected objects that allow the quantification of numerous personal health parameters. These innovations involve the creation of new companies and therefore the arrival of new players or intermediaries in the health sector, whose role (for example in terms of sharing medical responsibility) has yet to be clarified.

Issues related to the digital transformation of organisations and digital innovation take on a particular meaning in this sector, because on the one hand, they must remain linked to the safety of patients and medical data, as well as to the quality of care, and on the other hand, they concern organisations that are characterised by their complexity and pluralism. It is therefore important to encourage research on these issues in order to identify, analyse and measure the transformations underway and their consequences for organisations, health professionals and patients.

Indeed, at a time when companies' speeches put forward important benefits for users, it is important for researchers to be able to both 1) question these speeches and provide evidence on their actual achievements, on their stakes and their consequences and 2) propose actionable knowledge to the actors in the field in order to implement these new innovations to better solve the problems encountered
In this context, several questions seem to us to be important for structuring research on this topic:

  • The characteristics, strategies and challenges of the new health IT business sector,
  • The digital transformations of health organisations, in connection with the construction of new skills, practices and roles for health professionals,
  • The deployment of digital services and care paths
  • Digital innovations in health and the role of the patient.
